Translation

✧ The situation of the Abbasid propagandists It was said: In the year one hundred and seventeen, Asad b. ʿAbd Allāh seized a group of the Abbasid propagandists in Khurasan. He killed some of them, mutilated some, and imprisoned some. Among those he seized were Sulaymān b. Kathīr, Mālik b. al-Haytham, Mūsā b. Kaʿb, Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ, Khālid b. Ibrāhīm, and Ṭalḥa b. Zurayq. They were brought to him, and he said [to them]: "O you sinners, did not God Almighty say: 'God has pardoned what is past; but whoever returns, God will take vengeance on him'?" Sulaymān said to him: "By God, we are as the poet said: If my throat were choked by something other than water, I would be like one choking who seeks relief in water. By God, the scorpions have been hunted by your own hands! We are people from your own tribe! The Muḍarīs brought this upon you because we were the severest people against Qutayba b. Muslim, and they sought their revenge." So he sent them to prison. Then he said to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nuʿaym: "What do you think?" He said: "I think you should grant them as a favor to their clans." He said: "I will not do that." He released those among them who were from the people of Yemen because he was of them, and those from Rabīʿa he also released because of their alliance with Yemen. He wanted to kill those who were from Muḍar. He summoned Mūsā b. Kaʿb and bridled him with a donkey's bridle. He pulled the bridle, and his teeth were shattered, and his face and nose were battered. He summoned Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ and said to him: "This is not right. You do this to us and leave the Yemenis and Rabīʿīs?" He struck him three hundred lashes. Al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-Azdī testified to his innocence and that of his companions, so he left them.
