The Year 96
وَفِي سنة ست وتسعين غَزَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الصَّائِفَةَ، وَغَزَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الرُّومَ، فَفَتَحَ طُولَسَ وَالْمَرْزُبَانَيْنِ مِنْ بِلَادِ الرُّومِ. وَفِيهَا عَزَلَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ حَيَّانَ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ لِسَبْعٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهَا أَبَا بَكْرِ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَزْمٍ، وَكَانَ عُثْمَانُ قَدْ عَزَمَ عَلَى أَنْ يَجْلِدَ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَيَحْلِقَ لِحْيَتَهُ مِنَ الْغَدِ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ اللَّيْلُ جَاءَ الْبَرِيدُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِتَأْمِيرِهِ وَعَزْلِ عُثْمَانَ وَحَدِّهِ، [ وَأَنْ ] يُقَيِّدَهُ. وَفِيهَا عَزَلَ سُلَيْمَانُ يَزِيدَ بْنَ أَبِي مُسْلِمٍ عَنِ الْعِرَاقِ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ يَزِيدَ بْنَ الْمُهَلَّبِ، وَجَعَلَ صَالِحَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَلَى الْخَرَاجِ، وَأَمَرَهُ بِقَتْلِ بَنِي عَقِيلٍ وَبَسْطِ الْعَذَابِ عَلَيْهِمْ، وَهُمْ أَهْلُ الْحَجَّاجِ، فَكَانَ يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَيَلِي عَذَابَهُمْ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ الْمُهَلَّبِ، وَكَانَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْمُهَلَّبِ قَدِ اسْتَعْمَلَ أَخَاهُ زِيَادًا عَلَى حَرْبِ عُثْمَانَ. وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ عَزَلَ سُلَيْمَانُ خَالِدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْقَسْرِيَّ عَنْ مَكَّةَ وَوَلَّاهَا طَلْحَةَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ الْحَضْرَمِيَّ . وَفِيهَا: غَزَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَرْضَ الصَّائِفَةِ فَفَتَحَ حِصْنًا يُقَالُ لَهُ: حِصْنُ عَوْفٍ.
Translation
✧ In the year ninety-six, Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the summer expedition, and al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd raided the Byzantines, and he conquered Ṭūlas and al-Marzubānayn from the lands of the Byzantines. In it, Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed ʿUthmān b. Ḥayyān from Madinah when seven nights remained of Ramaḍān, and appointed over it Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. Ḥazm. ʿUthmān had resolved to flog Abū Bakr and shave his beard on the morrow. When night came, the courier came to Abū Bakr with his appointment and ʿUthmān's dismissal and punishment, and that he be fettered. In it, Sulaymān dismissed Yazīd b. Abī Muslim from Iraq, and appointed Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and put Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān over the land tax, and ordered him to kill the Banū ʿAqīl and extend torture to them—they being the people of al-Ḥajjāj. He used to torture them, and ʿAbd al-Malik b. al-Muhallab would administer their torture. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab had appointed his brother Ziyād over the war against ʿUthmān. In this year, Sulaymān dismissed Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī from Makkah and appointed Ṭalḥah b. Dāwūd al-Ḥaḍramī over it. In it: Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the land of the summer expedition and conquered a fortress called Ḥiṣn ʿAwf.
