وَأَمَرَ مُصْعَبٌ بِكَفِّ الْمُخْتَارِ فَقُطِعَتْ وَسُمِرَتْ إِلَى جَانِبِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ هُنَالِكَ حَتَّى قَدِمَ الْحَجَّاجُ، فَسَأَلَ عَنْهَا فَقِيلَ لَهُ: هِيَ كَفُّ الْمُخْتَارِ، فَأَمَرَ بِهَا ✧ The governorship of Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr over al-Baṣrah And the killing of al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd al-Thaqafī, the liar, at the hands of Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr and the people of al-Baṣrah ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr had, in this year, dismissed from the deputy-governorship of al-Baṣrah al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī, known as al-Qubāʿ, and appointed to it his brother Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, so that he might be a support, a match, and an equal for al-Mukhtār. When Muṣʿab arrived at al-Baṣrah, he entered it veiled and made for the pulpit. When he ascended it, the people said, “A governor! A governor!” When he uncovered the veil, the people recognized him and came to him. Al-Qubāʿ came and sat one step below him. When the people gathered, Muṣʿab rose as an orator and began with the narrative passages until he reached, “Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions,” and he gestured with his hand toward al-Shām or al-Kūfah. Then he said, “And We intend to bestow favor upon those who were oppressed in the land,” and he gestured toward the Ḥijāz. Then he said, “O people of al-Baṣrah, you give nicknames to your governors, and I have named myself the Butcher.” The people gathered around him and rejoiced in him. Account of Muṣʿab’s march against al-Mukhtār and the killing of al-Mukhtār When the people of al-Kūfah were defeated when they rose against al-Mukhtār, and he overcame them and killed those of them whom he killed, no one of its people fled except that he made for al-Baṣrah. Then, when al-Mukhtār went out to meet Ibn al-Ashtar, having learned that he had killed Ibn Ziyād, those of al-Mukhtār’s enemies who remained in al-Kūfah seized the opportunity of his absence and went to al-Baṣrah, fleeing from al-Mukhtār because of his scant religion, his unbelief, his claim that revelation came to him, and his putting the clients ahead of the nobles. Shabath b. Ribʿī came to him on a mule whose tail he had cut and whose ear he had notched, having slit his qabāʾ, crying, “O raid! O raid!” His news was brought up to Muṣʿab, who said, “This is Shabath b. Ribʿī.” He was admitted to him, and the nobles of al-Kūfah came and entered upon him and told him of what they had agreed upon, and asked him to support them and to march against al-Mukhtār with them. Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath also came to him and urged him to march. Muṣʿab brought him near and honored him for his nobility. He said to the people of al-Kūfah when they pressed him: “I will not march until al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah comes to me.” It happened that Ibn al-Ashtar, when he killed Ibn Ziyād, was occupied with those regions and secured for himself lands, provinces, and districts, and he belittled al-Mukhtār, so Muṣʿab began to covet him. Muṣʿab wrote to al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah, who was his governor over Fārs, summoning him to witness with them the fighting against al-Mukhtār. Al-Muhallab delayed and excused himself on account of some of the land tax, out of dislike of going out. Muṣʿab ordered Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath to go to al-Muhallab and urge him. Muḥammad went to him with Muṣʿab’s letter. When he read it, he said to him, “Did Muṣʿab find no courier other than you?” He said, “I am no one’s courier, except that our women, our sons, and our families have been overcome by our slaves.” Al-Muhallab came with him with great hosts and vast wealth and arrived at al-Baṣrah. Muṣʿab ordered the army to camp at the Great Bridge, and he sent ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mikhnaf to al-Kūfah, ordering him to bring out to him whoever he could, to dissuade the people from al-Mukhtār, and to summon them secretly to the oath of allegiance to Ibn al-Zubayr. He did so and entered his house in hiding. Then Muṣʿab marched, and he rode among the people of al-Baṣrah and those of the people of al-Kūfah who followed them, and they rode by sea and land, heading for al-Kūfah. Muṣʿab sent before him ʿAbbād b. al-Ḥuṣayn, placed on his right wing ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Maʿmar, and on the left wing al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah, and he arranged the commanders under their banners and tribes, such as Mālik b. Mismaʿ, al-Aḥnaf b. Qays, Ziyād b. ʿUmar, Qays b. al-Haytham, and others. Al-Mukhtār came out with his army and halted at al-Madhār. He placed over his vanguard Abū Kāmil al-Shākirī, over his right wing ʿAbd Allāh b. Kāmil, over his left wing ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb al-Jushamī, over the cavalry Wazīr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Salūlī, and over the clients Abū ʿAmrah, the commander of his shurṭah. Then he addressed the people and urged them to go out, sent armies before him, and rode with a host of his companions, giving them glad tidings of victory. Muṣʿab came and had placed ʿAbbād b. al-Ḥuṣayn over the cavalry. ʿAbbād approached Aḥmar and his companions and said, “We summon you to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and to the oath of allegiance to al-Mukhtār, and to making this matter a council among the family of the Messenger.” ʿAbbād returned and informed Muṣʿab, who said to him, “Go back and charge them.” He went back and charged Ibn Shumayṭ and his companions, but none of them dismounted. Then he withdrew to his position. Al-Muhallab charged Ibn Kāmil, and some of them wheeled about among others. Ibn Kāmil dismounted, and al-Muhallab turned away from him. Then al-Muhallab said to his companions, “Attack them with a true attack.” They made a fierce assault upon them, and they fled. Ibn Kāmil stood firm with men of Hamdān for a while, then was defeated. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh charged ʿAbd Allāh b. Anas, who stood firm for a while, then withdrew. The people all charged Ibn Shumayṭ, and he fought until he was killed. They called out to one another, “O company of Bajīlah and Khathʿam, be patient!” Al-Muhallab called out to them, “Flight today is safer for you. Why do you kill yourselves with these slaves?” Then he said, “By God, I do not think there will be much killing today except among my own people.” The cavalry turned upon the infantry of Ibn Shumayṭ, and they were routed. Muṣʿab sent ʿAbbād with the cavalry and said, “Whatever prisoner you take, strike his neck.” He sent Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath with a great body of cavalry from the people of al-Kūfah and said, “Take your vengeance.” They were harsher on the defeated than the people of al-Baṣrah, overtaking no fugitive but that they killed him, and taking no prisoner but that they killed him without pardon. None of that army escaped except a band of the cavalry; as for the infantry, they were annihilated except for a few. Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah al-Muzanī said: I came upon one of their men, and I thrust the spearhead into his eye, and I began to work his eye with it. It was said to him, “Did you do this?” He said, “Yes. Among us their blood was more lawful than that of the Turks and the Daylamites.” This Muʿāwiyah was the judge of al-Baṣrah. Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr’s entry into al-Kūfah and the siege of al-Mukhtār Al-Wāqidī said: When the vanguard of al-Mukhtār ended up at him, Muṣʿab came and crossed the Tigris to al-Kūfah. Al-Mukhtār had fortified the palace and placed over it ʿAbd Allāh b. Shaddād. Al-Mukhtār went out with those who remained with him and halted at Ḥarūrāʾ. When Muṣʿab’s army drew near him, he dispatched a squadron to each tribe: to Bakr b. Wāʾil he sent Saʿīd b. Munqidh; to ʿAbd al-Qays Mālik b. al-Mundhir; to al-ʿĀliyah ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿdah; to al-Azd Musāfir b. Saʿīd; to Banū Tamīm Sulaym b. Yazīd al-Kindī; and to Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath al-Sāʾib b. Mālik. Al-Mukhtār stood with the rest of his companions, and they fought a fierce battle until nightfall. The notables of al-Mukhtār’s companions were killed, and that night Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath and ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib were killed. The rest of al-Mukhtār’s companions scattered from him, and it was said to him, “The palace! The palace!” He said, “By God, I did not leave it intending to return to it, but this is God’s decree.” Then he went to the palace and entered it. Muṣʿab came to him and distributed the tribes in the districts of al-Kūfah, and they divided the quarters among themselves and reached the palace, and they cut off al-Mukhtār’s provisions and water. Al-Mukhtār would go out and fight them, then return to the palace. When the siege pressed hard upon him, he said to his companions, “The siege only increases us in weakness. Come down with us so that we may fight until night and die nobly.” But they were weak, and he said, “As for me, by God, I will not give my hand.” Then he performed the major ablution, perfumed himself, applied ḥanūṭ, and went out, and he and those with him fought until they were killed. It is said: Rather, a group of his horsemen advised him to enter the palace, the seat of his rule, so he entered it, blameworthy and condemned, and before long the decreed fate would be carried out upon him. Muṣʿab besieged him in it along with all his companions until they were afflicted with such severe thirst as only God knows, and he constricted their paths and routes, and the doors of stratagem were closed to them, and among them there was no rightly guided or forbearing man. Then al-Mukhtār began to turn over his thought and repeat his reflection on the affair that had befallen him, and he consulted those of the clients and slaves who were with him, while the tongue of fate and the law called out to him, “Say: The truth has come, and falsehood can neither originate nor repeat.” Then the strength of the courage implanted in him strengthened his resolve to go out, so it brought him out from among those whom he had allied with and befriended. He saw fit to die upon his horse, so that upon it would be the ending of his last breath. So he descended in zeal and anger, in valor and fury, and yet with that he found no escape, no refuge, and no place to flee, and with him of his companions were only nineteen. Perhaps, if he had continued in what he lived upon, the nineteen guardians of Saqar would not leave him. When he came out of the palace, he said to Muṣʿab’s companions, “Will you grant me safe conduct?” They said, “No, except according to the judgment of the governor.” He said, “Never, except the judgment of myself.” Then he fought a fierce fight. Two men, full brothers, advanced toward him: Ṭarafah and Ṭarrāf, the two sons of ʿAbd Allāh b. Dajājah of Banū Ḥanīfah. They killed him at the place of the oil sellers in al-Kūfah, cut off his head, and brought it to Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, who had entered the palace of the emirate. It was placed before him just as the head of Ibn Ziyād had been placed before al-Mukhtār, and just as the head of al-Ḥusayn had been placed before Ibn Ziyād, and just as the head of Muṣʿab would later be placed before ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. When the head of al-Mukhtār was placed before Muṣʿab, he ordered for the two men thirty thousand. Muṣʿab killed a group of the Mukhtāriyyah and took five hundred prisoners from them, and their necks were struck to the last of them in a single day. Among Muṣʿab’s companions killed in the battle was Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath b. Qays. Muṣʿab ordered the hand of al-Mukhtār to be cut off, and it was nailed beside the mosque. It remained there until al-Ḥajjāj arrived. He asked about it and was told, “It is the hand of al-Mukhtār,” so he ordered it to be taken down and removed from there, because al-Mukhtār was of the tribe of al-Ḥajjāj—for al-Mukhtār was the liar, and the destroyer was al-Ḥajjāj—and for this reason al-Ḥajjāj exacted vengeance for him from Ibn al-Zubayr and killed him and crucified him for months. Muṣʿab asked Umm Thābit bt. Samurah b. Jundub, the wife of al-Mukhtār, about him, and she said, “What can I say about him except what you yourselves say about him?” He left her and summoned his other wife, ʿAmrah bt. al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, and said to her, “What do you say about him?” She said, “May God have mercy on him. He was a servant among the righteous servants of God.” He imprisoned her and wrote to his brother that she was saying he was a prophet. He wrote back to him, “Bring her out and kill her.” He brought her out to the outskirts of the town, and she was struck several times until she died. About that ʿUmar b. Abī Rabīʿah al-Makhzūmī said: About that: Indeed, among the most wondrous of wonders to me is the killing of a fair, freeborn, delicate woman. She was killed thus without any crime; By God, what an excellent slain woman she was. Killing and fighting are decreed upon us, And upon chaste women, the trailing of skirts. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān b. Thābit al-Anṣārī also said about that: A rider came with the affair, the wondrous news, With the killing of the daughter of al-Nuʿmān, the man of religion and noble lineage. The killing of a young woman of coquetry, veiled, Of refined character, disposition, and lineage. Pure, of the progeny of a noble people, Of those who gave preference to goodness in ages past. The friend of the chosen Prophet, his helper, And his companion in war, in striking, and in distress. He came to me that the heretics had conspired To kill her – may they not be spared killing and plunder. May the family of al-Zubayr not enjoy a livelihood, And may they taste the garment of abasement, fear, and war. As though, when they brought her out and she was cut down By their swords, they had won the kingdom of the Arabs. Do the peoples not wonder at the killing of a freeborn woman, One of the chaste, religious women, praised in refinement, One of the heedless, believing, innocent Of blame, slander, doubt, and falsehood. Upon us is decreed killing and hardship, a duty, While they are chastity within the bridal canopies and behind the veils, Upon the religion of her forefathers, and fathers noble Who passed away without disgracing a family or doing wrong, Of the modest women, not a foul-mouthed scold, Compliant, not transgressing against her remote neighbor, Nor against the near neighbor. She never knew obscenity, Nor did she ever draw near with evil, nor did she respond. I wondered at her when she was bound while alive. Verily, this affair is among the most wondrous of wonders. Abū Mikhnaf said: Muḥammad b. Yūsuf related to me that Muṣʿab met ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb and greeted him. Ibn ʿUmar said, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your nephew, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr.” Ibn ʿUmar said to him, “Yes, are you the one who killed seven thousand of the people of the qiblah in a single morning? Live as long as you can!” Muṣʿab said, “They were unbelievers and sorcerers.” Ibn ʿUmar said, “By God, if you had killed their number in sheep from the inheritance of your father, that would have been extravagance.” Ibn al-Zubayr said to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, “Has the killing of the liar not reached you?” He said, “Who is the liar?” He said, “Ibn Abī ʿUbayd.” He said, “The killing of al-Mukhtār has reached me.” He said, “It is as though you disapprove of calling him a liar and grieve for him.” He said, “That was a man who killed those who killed us, sought our vengeance, and healed the burning in our breasts. His reward from us is not revilement and gloating.” ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr said to Ibn ʿAbbās, “The liar al-Mukhtār has been killed, and this is his head.” Ibn ʿAbbās said, “There remains for you a rugged pass. If you ascend it, then you are you; otherwise, no.” He meant ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. Al-Mukhtār’s gifts used to come to Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, and they accepted them. It is said: Ibn ʿUmar returned his gift.
