✧ The War between Ibn Khāzim and Banū Tamīm In this year, the year sixty-five, the war took place between Ibn Khāzim al-Sulamī and Banū Tamīm in Khurasan. The reason for that was that those of Banū Tamīm who were in Khurasan aided Ibn Khāzim against the Rabīʿah who were there, and mention of that has gone before. When Khurasan became clear for him, he treated Banū Tamīm harshly. He had placed his son Muḥammad over Herat, and appointed Bukayr b. Wassāj over his shurṭah, and joined to him Shammās b. Dithār al-ʿUṭāridī. The mother of Muḥammad was a Tamīmī woman. When Ibn Khāzim treated Banū Tamīm harshly, they came to his son Muḥammad at Herat. Ibn Khāzim wrote to his son Muḥammad and to Bukayr and Shammās, ordering them to prevent them from Herat. As for Shammās, he sided with Banū Tamīm. As for Bukayr, he prevented them, so they stayed in the lands of Herat. Bukayr sent to Shammās: "I have given you thirty thousand, so give each man of Banū Tamīm one thousand on condition that they depart." They refused him and remained, watching for Muḥammad. He went out to hunt, and they seized him, bound him tightly, and drank their night, making water on him whenever they wanted to urinate. Shammās said to them: "Since you have reached this point with him, kill him in return for your two companions whom he killed with whips." He had struck two men of Tamīm with whips until they died. They rose to kill him, but Jayhān b. Mashjaʿah al-Ḍabbī forbade them and threw himself upon him, but they did not accept that from him and killed Muḥammad. Ibn Khāzim thanked Jayhān for that, so he did not kill him among those he killed on the day of Fartanā. The ones who undertook the killing of Muḥammad were two men, one named ʿAjalah and the other Kusayb. Ibn Khāzim said: "Evil is what Kusayb has earned for his people, and ʿAjalah has brought evil upon his people." Tamīm advanced to Merv and appointed over themselves al-Ḥarīsh b. Hilāl al-Quraʿī. Most of them agreed to fight Ibn Khāzim. Al-Ḥarīsh b. Hilāl fought ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim for two years. When the war grew long, al-Ḥarīsh came out and called to Ibn Khāzim, saying to him: "The war between us has grown long. Why do you kill my people and your people? Come out to me, and whichever of us kills his companion, the land will be his." Ibn Khāzim said to him: "You have been fair." He came out to him, and they struck each other and assailed each other like two stallions, neither able to overcome the other. Then Ibn Khāzim was heedless, and al-Ḥarīsh struck him on his head, throwing the skin of his head onto his face. The stirrup of al-Ḥarīsh broke, and he withdrew the sword. Ibn Khāzim clung to the neck of his horse, returning to his companions. Then fighting resumed between them, and they remained thus after the blow for some days. Then both parties grew weary and split into three groups: one group to Nishapur with Baḥīr b. Warqāʾ, one group to another region, and one group containing al-Ḥarīsh to Merv al-Rūdh. Ibn Khāzim pursued him to a village called al-Malḥamah, while al-Ḥarīsh was with twelve men, his companions having dispersed from him, and they were in a ruin. When Ibn Khāzim reached him, he came out to him with his companions. A mawlā of Ibn Khāzim charged at al-Ḥarīsh and struck him but did nothing. Al-Ḥarīsh said to a man with him: "My sword does nothing against his armor, so give me a piece of wood." He gave him a stick of jujube. He charged at the mawlā and struck him, and he fell stunned. Then he said to Ibn Khāzim: "What do you want from me, when I have left you and the lands?" He said: "You will return to them." He said: "I will not return." So he made peace with him on condition that he leave Khurasan and not return to fight him. Ibn Khāzim gave him forty thousand, and al-Ḥarīsh opened for him the gate of the palace, and Ibn Khāzim entered it and guaranteed for him the payment of his debt, and they conversed for a long time. A piece of cotton flew off from the blow that was on Ibn Khāzim's head, and al-Ḥarīsh took it and put it back in its place. Ibn Khāzim said to him: "Your touch today is softer than your touch yesterday." Al-Ḥarīsh said: "Apology to God and to you. By God, had not my stirrup broken, the sword would have mixed with your head." Al-Ḥarīsh said concerning that: "The weight of the Rudaynī spear in the night journey before dawn has displaced the bone of my forearm from its mounting-place. For two years my eye did not close in any resting-place, except while my palm was a pillow for me upon a stone. My armor is iron, and my shirt, when eyes sleep away from me, is the trappings of the old male war-horse."
