The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
ذِكْرُ مَنْ تُوُفِّيَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ سَلْمَانُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ الْبَاهِلِيُّ: شَهِدَ يَوْمَ الْقَادِسِيَّةِ، وَحَدَّثَ عَنْ عُمَرَ ؓ، وَوَلَّاهُ قَضَاءَ الْمَدَائِنِ، وَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ وَلِيَ قَضَاءَ الْكُوفَةِ ثُمَّ عَزَلَهُ عُمَرُ، فَخَرَجَ غَازِيًا لِلتُّرْكِ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ فَاسْتُشْهِدَ بِالْجَرِّ مِنْ بِلَادِ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ فِي خِلَافَةِ عُثْمَانَ ؓ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ، وَقِيلَ فِي سَنَةِ ثَلَاثِينَ، وَقِيلَ فِي سَنَةِ إِحْدَى وَثَلَاثِينَ. وَعَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ سَلْمَانَ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ جَالِسًا بِالْمَدَائِنِ عَلَى قَضَائِهَا، وَاسْتَقْضَاهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ أَرْبَعِينَ يَوْمًا، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ رَجُلَيْنِ يَخْتَصِمَانِ، فَقُلْنَا لِأَبِي وَائِلٍ: فَمِمَّ ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ: مِنِ انْتِصَافِ النَّاسِ مِنْهُمْ.
Translation
✧ Mention of those who died in this year Salmān b. Rabīʿah al-Bāhilī: He witnessed the Day of al-Qādisiyyah, and he narrated from ʿUmar ؓ, and he appointed him to the judgeship of al-Madāʾin, and he was the first to hold the judgeship of al-Kūfah. Then ʿUmar dismissed him, and he went out as a raider against the Turks, then he returned and was martyred at al-Jarr in the lands of Armenia during the caliphate of ʿUthmān ؓ in this year. It is also said in the year thirty, and it is said in the year thirty-one. On the authority of Abū Wāʾil, who said: I saw Salmān b. Rabīʿah sitting in al-Madāʾin upon its judgeship, and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ had appointed him as judge for forty days, and I did not see two men disputing before him. We said to Abū Wāʾil: From what was that? He said: From the people's fairness being taken from them.
