The Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah

✧ Mention of some of the poetry that was said regarding the conquest of Makkah – may God Almighty increase it in honor Ḥassān b. Thābit ؓ said concerning the expedition of al-Ḥudaybiyah, alluding to the conquest, and some of it [was composed] in the pre-Islamic era, as has been reported from him, and it is what I have omitted from it in the description of wine: It was effaced, Dhāt al-Aṣābiʿ then al-Jiwāʾ up to ʿAdhrāʾ – its abode is empty; dwellings of the Banū al-Ḥasḥās, desolate, which the dust-stirring winds and the rain efface. Until he said: May we lose our horses if you do not see them stirring up the dust, their tryst is Kadāʾ, They vie with the reins, inclining their heads, on their shoulders are thirsty spearheads. Our steeds remain in flowing gait, the women strike them with their veils. If you turn away from us, we have performed the ʿumrah, and the conquest took place and the cover was removed; Otherwise, be patient for the clash of a day in which God grants victory to whomever He wills. And Gabriel, the Messenger of God, is among us, and the Holy Spirit, who has no equal. And God said: 'I have sent a servant who speaks the truth, if the trial may benefit.' I bore witness to him, so rise and affirm him, but you said: 'We will not rise and we do not wish to.' And God said: 'I have dispatched a host, they are the Anṣār; the encounter presented it to them.' For us, every day, from Maʿadd there is reviling, or fighting, or satire. We judge with rhymes those who satirize us, and we strike when blood is mingled. Indeed, convey to Abū Sufyān from me a harsh message, for rough treatment has become evident: That our swords have left you a slave, and the masters of ʿAbd al-Dār are slave women. You satirized Muḥammad and I answered on his behalf, and with God is the recompense for that. Do you satirize him, when you are not an equal to him? May the worse of you two be a ransom for the better of you. You have satirized a blessed, righteous, upright man, the trusted one of God, whose nature is fidelity. Is one who satirizes the Messenger of God from among you and one who praises him and supports him equal? Indeed my father, my mother, and my honor are a protection for Muḥammad's honor from you. A keen sword will soon sever you from him, fashioning the decisive verses as it wills. My tongue is a sharp sword with no defect in it, and my sea is not muddied by buckets. And Kaʿb b. Mālik ؓ said: We accomplished from Tihāmah every need, and Khaybar; then we rested the swords. We inform them, and if they could speak, their cutting edges would say: Daws or Thaqīf. I am not a guardian's dependent if you do not see them in the courtyard of your abode, thousands from us, And we snatch away the bride in the belly of Wajj, and your abode becomes from you deserted, And there comes to you from us the foremost of a cavalry that leaves behind it a dense host. When they alight in your courtyard, you will hear from what it has made to kneel there a trembling; In their hands are sharp, polished swords that visit those who warm themselves by them with deaths, Like the ʿaqāʾiq [crescent-shaped ornaments], which the smiths of India have made pure, not struck with rivets [of iron]. You would think the blood of the heroes in them on the morning of the advance is fresh saffron mixed with wine. I urged them: Is there no sincere adviser for them from the peoples who was acquainted with us, To tell them that we have gathered noble horses and swift, high-bred camels, And that we have come to them with an army that surrounds the wall of their fortress in ranks? Their leader is the Prophet, and he was firm, pure of heart, steadfast, and abstemious, Of sound judgment, possessing wisdom, knowledge, and forbearance; he was not rash or light-headed. We obey our Prophet and we obey a Lord who is the Most Merciful; He was compassionate toward us. If you offer us peace, we will accept it and make you a support and a bountiful helper for us; But if you refuse, we will fight you and be patient, and our affair will not be trembling and weak. We will fight as long as we remain, or until you return to Islam in humble compliance, submitting again. We will fight, not caring whom we meet, whether our inherited wealth or newly acquired wealth is destroyed. How many a community banded together against us, the core of the stock among them and the confederate, They came to us seeing no equal for themselves, and we cut off the ears and the noses With every Indian sword, supple, polished, with which we drove them harshly, For the command of God and Islam, until the religion stands upright, straight, And al-Lāt, al-ʿUzzā, and Wudd are forgotten, and we strip them of the necklaces and the earrings. So they became at evening having acknowledged and become tranquil; and whoever does not resist accepts humiliation. And Anas b. Zunaym al-Dīlī ؓ said, apologizing to the Messenger of God ﷺ for what ʿAmr b. Sālim al-Khuzāʿī – ؓ – had said about him: Are you the one by whose command Maʿadd is guided? Nay, God guides them, and He said to you: 'Bear witness.' No she-camel has carried on her saddle one more righteous and more faithful to a covenant than Muḥammad. He urges to good and is most generous in giving, when he goes forth like the polished Indian sword, And he clothes with the striped Yemeni cloak before it is worn, and he gives to the head of the foremost, the one who strips himself [for battle]. You know, O Messenger of God, that you will overtake me, and that a threat from you is like seizing by the hand. You know, O Messenger of God, that you are able over every band of the accused and the helper. You know that the riders, the riders of ʿUwaymir, are the liars who break every promise. They told the Messenger of God that I had satirized him; may my hand never carry my whip to me again, Except that I said: Woe to the mother of young men who were struck by ill fortune, not by auspiciousness or good luck; They were struck by one who was not equal to their blood, so my weeping and my stupor became intense. Indeed you have violated protection if you were pursuing ʿAbd b. ʿAbd Allāh and the daughter of Muhwid. Dhuʾayb, Kulthūm, and Salmā followed one another all together; if the eye does not weep, I am bleary-eyed. And Salmā, and Salmā – no tribe is like his, nor his brothers, or are there kings like ʿAbd? For I have not shed any blood wrongfully, nor poured any blood; let the Knower of truth make it clear and be just. And may God Almighty have mercy on the Imam Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Zakariyyāʾ al-Shaqrāṭisī, where he said: And on the day of Makkah, when it dawned upon nations, from which the passes of the rugged and the plain were too narrow, Banners whose expanse the two horizons could not contain, in a dark cloud of the dust of horses and camels, And a mighty host that filled the regions, with a clamor, a vast army like the surge of a torrent pouring forth. And you – may God's blessings be upon you – advanced before them in a pavilion from which a complete light of yours shone, Illuminating above a radiant face, chosen, crowned with the mighty victory, auspicious, Rising before the armies of God, wearing the garment of dignity, complying with the command of God. The regions of the earth bowed in fear beneath the splendor of might when awe rose with you, like the act of the humble, the frightened. And the angels of heaven rejoice in what they have gained, since you attained from it the utmost hope, And the earth trembles from pride and from awe, and the air shines brightly from joy, And the horses strut proudly in their reins, and life flows gently in the folds of the soil. Were it not for what the pens have written of destiny and a prior decree without alteration, Thahlān would have burst into the tahlīl from ecstasy, and Yadhbul would have melted in acclamation from the melting. Dominion belongs to God; this is the glory of one for whom prophethood was bound above the Throne in pre-eternity. You mended the crack of Quraysh after the peoples of the passes of the plain and the peaks had split them apart. They said: Muḥammad's battalions have increased, like lions whose crooked fangs roar. Woe to Makkah from the traces of his tread, and woe to the mother of Quraysh from the anguish of the loss. You were generous with pardon by the grace of pardon from you, and you did not blame nor with painful reproach or remonstrance. You turned away with forgiveness from their crimes, a bounty that prolonged the noon rest of sleep in the eyes. You had mercy on the close-knit ties of kinship, for whom was prepared beneath the spears the sobbing of terror and fear. They sought refuge in the shade of one generous in pardon, gentle, blessed of face, encompassed with success, The purest of creation in character, the cleanest of them, and the noblest of people in forgiving those who slip. Humility was adorned by dignity from him in modesty, more delicate than the modesty of a virgin in her veils. And you circumambulated the House, gladdened, and around it circumambulated those who, shortly before the conquest, were occupied with other than it. And unbelief was submerged in the darkness of filth, dwelling in the station of the beast of prey from Saturn. You secured with safety the borders of the Ḥijāz altogether, and you turned away fear from Khīf and from Malal. Security and blessing from you descended in Yemen, when it responded to faith in haste, And the religion became, its sides surrounded with the might of victory, and it prevailed over the creeds. The deviant among them obeyed the one who acknowledges, and the crooked among them submitted to the upright. Love the friendship of the people of truth in the breach, and the glory of his radiant state among the states. It headed to al-Yamāmah a day from it that was exterminating, and it alighted in Syria an evil omen that did not depart. From it the crests of Iraq were scattered, and it left no bone of the Turks unbroken. No lion of the Persians remained except as prey, and no army of the host remained except routed, And no wall of China remained except humbled, and no archer of the Romans remained except unsuccessful, And no host of the Nubians remained except cut down, and no strong one of the Zanj remained except felled. And the sword reached the shore of the sea, and the call of the armies was joined, so all were engaged in jihād. And he drew in the west the edge of the sword, when the east was filled with the east before the gleaming blades and the spearheads, And every enemy whose side was mighty returned, having returned from you with a gift not given out, Purer than snow in radiance is its taste, sweeter than milk mixed with honey.
