The Treaty of al-Hudaybiyah
Translation
✧ The Pledge of Riḍwān [The Messenger’s taking the pledge of the people for war and the holding back of al-Jadd] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said, when news reached him that ʿUthmān had been killed: “We will not depart until we fight the people.” The Messenger of God ﷺ called the people to the pledge, and it was the Pledge of Riḍwān beneath the tree. The people used to say: The Messenger of God ﷺ made them pledge upon death. Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh used to say: The Messenger of God ﷺ did not make us pledge upon death, but he made us pledge that we would not flee. The Messenger of God ﷺ took the pledge of the people, and not one of the Muslims who was present held back from it except al-Jadd b. Qays, the brother of the Banū Salimah. Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh used to say: By God, it is as if I am looking at him clinging to the armpit of his she-camel. He had crouched beside it, hiding behind it from the people. Then it came to the Messenger of God ﷺ that what had been mentioned concerning the affair of ʿUthmān was false.
