✧ [The affair of Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken many captives from them, and his division of them spread among the Muslims. Among the captives taken that day was Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār, the wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr narrated to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided the captives of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith fell to the share of Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās, or to a cousin of his. She made a contract with him for her ransom. She was a sweet, beautiful woman; no one saw her without being captivated by her. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his help with her ransom contract. ʿĀʾishah said: By Allah, as soon as I saw her at the door of my chamber, I disliked her, and I knew that he ﷺ would see in her what I saw. She entered upon him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār, the chief of his people. I have been afflicted with what is not hidden from you, and I fell to the share of Thābit b. Qays b. al-Shammās, or to a cousin of his. I made a contract with him for my ransom, and I have come to you seeking your help with my ransom. He said: Would you like something better than that? She said: And what is it, O Messenger of Allah? He said: I will pay your ransom and marry you. She said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: I have done so. She said: The news spread to the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had married Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār. The people said: In-laws of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they released what was in their hands. She said: By his marrying her, one hundred households of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq were set free. I know of no woman who was a greater blessing to her people than she. Ibn Hishām said: It is said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the expedition of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq with Juwayriyah bt. al-Ḥārith, and he was at Dhāt al-Jaysh, he entrusted Juwayriyah to a man from the Anṣār as a deposit, and ordered him to guard her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah. Her father al-Ḥārith b. Abī Ḍirār came with the ransom for his daughter. When he was at al-ʿAqīq, he looked at the camels he had brought for the ransom and desired two of them, so he hid them in one of the ravines of al-ʿAqīq. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: O Muḥammad, you have captured my daughter, and this is her ransom. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Where are the two camels you hid at al-ʿAqīq, in such-and-such ravine? Al-Ḥārith said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah. By Allah, none but Allah knew of that. So al-Ḥārith embraced Islam, and with him two of his sons and some people of his tribe embraced Islam. He sent for the two camels and brought them, and he handed over the camels to the Prophet ﷺ, and his daughter Juwayriyah was returned to him. She embraced Islam, and her Islam was good. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her father for her hand, and he married her to him, giving her a dowry of four hundred dirhams.
