The Great Expedition of Badr
Translation
✧ [ The number of those from al-Aws who witnessed Badr ] So all those from al-Aws who witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and those for whom his arrow and reward were allotted, were sixty-one men. The number of al-Aws was less than that of al-Khazraj, even though they were more severe than them, stronger in might, and more steadfast at the meeting, because their dwellings were in the ʿawālī of al-Madinah, and the call to arms came suddenly. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'None should follow us except one whose mount is present.' So men whose mounts were in the upper part of al-Madinah asked his permission to wait for them until they could go to their mounts, but he refused. Their resolve was not upon the meeting, nor had they prepared for it its equipment, nor readied for it its gear. But Allah brought them and their enemy together without an appointment.
