An imam of ours, whose kunyah was Abu Rimthah, led us in prayer. He said: I performed this prayer—or one like it—with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Abu Bakr and Umar would stand in the front row to his right. A man had caught the opening takbir of the prayer. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ prayed, then gave salam to his right and his left until we could see the whiteness of his cheek. He then turned around as Abu Rimthah turned—meaning himself. The man who had caught the opening takbir of the prayer with him then stood to add another prayer. Umar sprang toward him, took him by the shoulder, shook him, and said: Sit down, for the People of the Book were only ruined because there was no separation between their prayers. The Prophet ﷺ raised his gaze and said: "Allah has guided you to what is right, O son of al-Khattab."
