✧ We were with 'Ali when a man asked him about the Mahdi. 'Ali said, "Far from it!" Then he made a gesture with his hand, counting seven, and said, "That one will come forth at the end of time, when a man says 'Allah, Allah' and is killed. Allah will gather for him a people scattered like patches of clouds, and Allah will unite their hearts. They will feel lonely with no one, and they will not rejoice in anyone. They will be joined by the number of the companions of Badr—the first ones did not outstrip them, and the last ones will not catch up with them—and by the number of the companions of Talut who crossed the river with him." Abu al-Tufayl said: Ibn al-Hanafiyyah said, "Do you want him?" I said, "Yes." He said, "He will come forth from between these two pillars." I said, "No doubt, by Allah, I will not see them until I die." And he died there—meaning Makkah, may Allah the Exalted protect it.
