✧ I heard Abu Bakr Muhammad b. Yahya al-Suli the grammarian say, "The first of the Arab poets to praise the Turks was 'Ali b. al-'Abbas al-Rumi, when he said [in the wafir meter]: When they stand firm, they are a barrier of iron; you would think our eyes are bewildered within it. And when they go forth, they are fires blazing upon the enemies, driven by borrowing. The kings of the earth: their eyes are small when they go forth, but their souls are great."
