✧ I entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was leaving it. I followed him, walking behind him while he was unaware, until he entered a palm grove. He faced the qiblah and prostrated, prolonging the prostration while I was behind him, until I thought that Allah had taken his soul. I came walking until I reached him, lowered my head to look at his face. He raised his head and said: 'What is the matter, O Abd al-Rahman?' I said: When you prolonged the prostration, O Messenger of Allah, I feared that your soul had been taken, so I came to look. He said: 'When I entered the palm grove, Jibril met me and said: I bring you glad tidings that Allah says: Whoever greets you, I greet him, and whoever sends blessings upon you, I send blessings upon him.'

machine translationAl-Dāraquṭnī was asked about the hadith of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, from his grandfather ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, that the Prophet ﷺ prolonged his prostration (the hadith). He said: ʿAmr b. Abī ʿAmr narrates it from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, and there is disagreement about it from him. Saʿīd b. Salamah b. Abī al-Ḥusām and al-Darāwardī narrated it from ʿAmr b. Abī ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Muḥammad, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. Sulaymān b. Bilāl differed from them: he narrated it from ʿAmr b. Abī ʿAmr, from ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, adding ʿĀṣim to its chain. Al-Ḥimmānī narrated it and made it from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, from his father, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, and that is not preserved (maḥfūẓ). The correct version is the statement of Saʿīd b. Salamah and al-Darāwardī. ʿAmr b. Abī ʿAmr has another chain for it, which al-Layth narrates from Ibn al-Hād, from ʿAmr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥuwayrith, from Muḥammad b. Jubayr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī also narrated it, and there is disagreement about it from him. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Suhayl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. Isḥāq b. Abī Farwah differed from him: he narrated it from Abū al-Zubayr, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from his father. I say: Al-Dāraquṭnī's statement indicates that the narration of Ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Darāwardī that we cited earlier, with the words "ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, from his father, from his grandfather," contains an error in the words "from his father." Likewise, in the narration of al-Ṭūsī from Abū Salamah al-Khuzāʿī, from Layth, from Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb, there is also an error; it is rather Yazīd b. ʿAbdullāh b. al-Hād, as shown by the narration of Imam Aḥmad and also the statement of al-Dāraquṭnī. And God knows best.
