أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ الْفَقِيهُ بِبَغْدَادَ قِرَاءَةً عَلَى عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ ثنا سَهْلُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ وَأَبُو رَبِيعَةَ قَالَا ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الصَّغَانِيُّ ثنا عَفَّانُ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ إِيَاسٍ الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَاصِ

أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ اجْعَلْنِي إِمَامَ قَوْمِي قَالَ «أَنْتَ إِمَامُهُمْ وَاقْتَدِ بِأَضْعَفِهِمْ وَاتَّخِذْ مُؤَذِّنًا لَا يَأْخُذُ عَلَى أَذَانِهِ أَجْرًا» عَلَى شَرْطِ مُسْلِمٍ وَلَمْ يُخَرِّجَاهُ

Messenger of Allah, appoint me the leader of the tribe in prayer. He said: You are their leader, but you should follow on who is the weakest of them: and appoint a mu'adhdhin who does not charge for the calling of adhan. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 531)
