✧ 'Umar b. al-Khattab said: Hatib b. Abi Balta'ah wrote to the people of Makkah, and Allah Almighty informed His Prophet ﷺ of it. He sent 'Ali and al-Zubayr in pursuit of the letter. They caught up with a woman on a camel and extracted the letter from a lock of her hair. They brought it to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and it was read to him. He sent for Hatib and said: 'O Hatib, did you write this letter?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He asked: 'What prompted you to do that?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I am sincere to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, but I was a stranger among the people of Makkah, and my family was in their midst. I feared for them, so I wrote a letter that does not harm Allah and His Messenger in any way, and perhaps there is some benefit in it for my family.' 'Umar said: I drew my sword and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, let me deal with him, for he has disbelieved, and I will strike his neck.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Ibn al-Khattab, what do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of this band—the people of Badr—and said: Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you.'
