✧ While I was preparing to travel from Makkah to my father, Hind bt. ‘Utba b. Rabi‘a followed me and said, “O daughter of Muhammad, has it not reached me that you want to join your father?” I said, “I did not intend that.” She said, “O cousin, do not do it. If you need any supplies for your journey to help you reach your father, I have what you need.” Zaynab said, “By Allah, I do not think she said that except to make me do it. But I feared her and denied that I intended that. So I prepared myself. When I finished my preparations, my brother-in-law Kinana b. al-Rabi‘, the brother of my husband, came and brought me a camel. I mounted it, and he took his bow and quiver and set out with me in daylight, leading the camel while she was in her howdah. The men of Quraysh talked about it and went out in pursuit of her until they caught up with her at Dhu Tuwa. The first to reach her were Habbar b. al-Aswad b. al-Muttalib b. Asad b. ‘Abd al-‘Uzza and Nafi‘ b. ‘Abd Qays al-Fihri, due to kinship from Banu Abi ‘Ubayd in Ifriqiya. Habbar frightened her with a spear while she was in her howdah. The woman was pregnant, as they claim. When she was frightened, she miscarried her unborn child. Her brother-in-law knelt down and emptied his quiver, then said, “No man comes near me except that I put an arrow in him.” The people held back from him. Abu Sufyan came with a group of Quraysh and said, “O man, withhold your arrows from us until we speak to you.” He withheld them. Abu Sufyan approached until he stood before him and said, “You have not done right. You went out with the woman openly before the people, and you know our calamity and disaster and what Muhammad ﷺ has brought upon us. The people will think, since his daughter has been taken out to him openly before the people from among us, that this is due to humiliation that befell us because of our calamity, and that it is weakness and impotence on our part. By my life, we have no need to keep her from her father. But return with the woman until the clamor subsides and people talk that we have sent her back; then take her secretly and deliver her to her father.” He did so. He returned and she stayed for some nights. When the clamor subsided, he went out with her at night until he handed her over to Zayd b. Haritha and his companion, and they brought her to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
