✧ I came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said: “O Prophet of Allah, I have composed poetry in which I praise Allah, Blessed and Exalted, and praise you.” He said: “As for what you praised Allah, the Exalted, then bring it, and as for what you praised me with, leave it.” So I began to recite it. A tall, aquiline-nosed man entered, and he said to me: “Stop.” When he left, he said: “Continue.” I began reciting again, and it was not long before he returned, and he said to me: “Stop.” When he left, he said: “Continue.” I said: “Who is this, O Prophet of Allah, who when he enters you say stop, and when he leaves you say continue?” He said: “This is ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and he is not one for falsehood in anything.”
