حَدَّثَنَا بِصِحَّةِ مَا ذَكَرَهُ الشَّيْخُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَنْبَأَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ الْأَحْنَفَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ قَالَ
بَيْنَا أَنَا أَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ فِي زَمَنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ إِذْ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي لَيْثٍ وَأَخَذَ يَدِي فَقَالَ أَلَا أُبَشِّرُكَ قُلْتُ بَلَى فَقَالَ هَلْ تَذْكُرُ إِذْ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى قَوْمِكَ بَنِي سَعْدٍ فَجَعَلْتُ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْإِسْلَامَ وَأَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَيْهِ فَقُلْتُ أَنْتَ إِنَّكَ تَدْعُو إِلَى الْخَيْرِ وَتَأْمُرُ بِالْخَيْرِ فَبَلَّغْتُ ذَلِكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «اللَّهُمُ اغْفِرْ لِلْأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ» فَكَانَ الْأَحْنَفُ يَقُولُ مَا مِنْ عَمَلِي شَيْءٌ أَرْجَى لِي مِنْهُسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ While I was circumambulating the House in the time of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, a man from Banū Layth came and took my hand. He said: “Shall I give you good news?” I said: “Yes.” He said: “Do you remember when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to your people, Banū Saʿd, and I began presenting Islam to them and calling them to it? You said: ‘You call to good and command good.’ I conveyed that to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: ‘O Allah, forgive al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays.’” So al-Aḥnaf used to say: “There is nothing in my deeds that gives me more hope than that.” Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
