✧ Among the blessings of Allah upon 'Ali b. Abi Talib, and the good that Allah willed for him, was that Quraysh was afflicted by a severe famine. Abu Talib had many dependents, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his uncle al-'Abbas, who was among the wealthiest of Banu Hashim: 'O Abu al-Fadl, your brother Abu Talib has many dependents, and the people have been struck by this famine as you see. Come with us to him so that we may relieve him of some of his dependents. I will take one of his sons, and you take another, and we will support them on his behalf.' Al-'Abbas said, 'Yes.' So they both went until they came to Abu Talib and said, 'We want to relieve you of some of your dependents until the people are relieved of what they are suffering.' Abu Talib said to them, 'If you leave 'Aqeel for me, then do as you wish.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took 'Ali and gathered him to himself, and al-'Abbas took Ja'far and gathered him to himself. 'Ali remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until Allah sent him as a prophet, and he followed him and believed him. Al-'Abbas took Ja'far, and Ja'far remained with al-'Abbas until he became Muslim and no longer needed him.
