وَأَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الْحُسَيْنِ ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ ثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ

كَانَ لِابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ مِائَةُ غُلَامٍ يَتَكَلَّمُ كُلُّ غُلَامٍ مِنْهُمْ بِلُغَةٍ أُخْرَى فَكَانَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ يُكَلِّمُ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ بِلُغَتِهِ وَكُنْتَ إِذَا نَظَرْتَ إِلَيْهِ فِي أَمْرِ دُنْيَاهُ قُلْتَ هَذَا رَجُلٌ لَمْ يُرِدِ اللَّهَ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَإِذَا نَظَرْتَ إِلَيْهِ فِي أَمْرِ آخِرَتِهِ قُلْتَ هَذَا رَجُلٌ لَمْ يُرِدِ الدُّنْيَا طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ

Translation

✧ Ibn al-Zubayr had a hundred slaves, each of whom spoke a different language, and Ibn al-Zubayr would speak to each of them in his own language. When you looked at him in a worldly matter, you would say: This is a man who has not desired Allah for the blink of an eye. And when you looked at him in a matter of the Hereafter, you would say: This is a man who has not desired this world for the blink of an eye.
