✧ They set out to Syria in a caravan from the people of Makkah to procure provisions. They came to a woman called Layla, and they saw her appearance and beauty. Abdur-Rahman b. Abi Bakr returned while he was courting her in verse: [al-tawil meter] I remembered Layla while al-Samawah lay between us. What is it to me about the daughter of al-Judi, Layla, and what is mine? I would give a Harithi kiss that settles in Busra or settles in al-Jawabiya. When it was the time of Khalid b. al-Walid and he conquered Syria, they captured her among the captives. Abdur-Rahman b. Abi Bakr spoke to Khalid about her, so Khalid wrote to Abu Bakr about it, and Abu Bakr wrote that they should give her to him.
