✧ Abu Ayyub fought at Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he did not miss any campaign of the Muslims except that he was in it, except one year, when a young man was appointed over the army and he stayed behind that year. After that he began to regret it and say, 'What concern is it to me who is appointed?' He fell ill while Yazid b. Mu'awiya was in command of the army. Yazid entered to visit him and said, 'What is your need?' He said, 'My need is that when I die, you mount and then advance into enemy territory as far as you find a passage. If you find no passage, then bury me and return.' He said: Abu Ayyub used to say: Allah, exalted is He, said: 'Go forth, light and heavy' [Qur'an 9:41], so I find myself only light or heavy. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
