حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ ثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ ثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ
أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ فَنَادَى يَسْتَأْذِنُ أَبُو عِيسَى عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ وَمَنْ أَبُوعِيسَى؟ قَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ أَنَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ وَهَلْ لِعِيسَى مِنْ أَبٍ أَمَا فِي كُنَى الْعَرَبِ مَا تَكْتَنُونَ بِهَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَأَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ «أَشْهَدُ لَقَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُكَنِّي بِهَا الْمُغِيرَةَ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَدْ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ وَمَا تَأَخَّرَ وَإِنَّا فِي خْلَجٍ مَا نَدْرِي مَا يُفْعَلُ بِنَا فَكَنَّاهُ بِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِسكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

✧ A man came and called out, seeking permission: "Abu 'Isa is at the door of the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar." 'Umar said, "And who is Abu 'Isa?" He said, "Al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah, I am he." 'Umar said, "Does 'Isa have a father? Is there not among the kunyas of the Arabs what you can use as kunyas, like Abu 'Abd Allah and Abu 'Abd al-Rahman?" A man said, "I testify that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give him the kunya of Abu 'Isa." 'Umar said, "The Prophet ﷺ has been forgiven his past and future sins, but we are in confusion; we do not know what will be done with us." So he gave him the kunya Abu 'Abd Allah. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.

machine translationKhālid b. al-Ḥārith narrated it from Ḥabīb b. al-Shahīd, from Zayd b. Aslam, from his father, from ʿUmar, as a connected report (musnad). Ḥammād b. Salamah and others differed from him, and they narrated it from Zayd b. Aslam as a mursal report from ʿUmar. The more likely view is that of the one who narrated it as mursal.
