✧ Mu'awiyah sent to Marwan b. al-Hakam in Madinah to take the oath of allegiance for his son Yazid, and Sa'id b. Zayd b. 'Amr b. Nufayl was absent. He kept waiting for him. A man from the people of Syria said to Marwan: What is holding you back? He said: Until Sa'id b. Zayd comes, for he is the elder of the people of Madinah; when he pledges allegiance, the people will pledge allegiance. He said: Sa'id b. Zayd was delayed until Marwan took the oath of allegiance, and Sa'id withheld from the oath of allegiance.
