✧ We witnessed Siffin with 'Ali. We had appointed two men so that when the enemy was heedless, he attacked them and did not return until he dyed his sword with blood. Then he said: "Excuse me, for by Allah, I did not return until my sword rebounded upon me." He said: And I saw 'Ammar and Hashim b. 'Utba while he was walking between the two ranks, and 'Ammar said: "O Hashim, this, by Allah, will surely betray his command and forsake his army." Then he said: "O Hashim, Paradise is beneath the flashing swords today; I meet the beloved ones Muhammad and his party. O Hashim, one-eyed, and there is no good in a one-eyed man who does not face hardship." He said: Then Hashim shook the banner and said [rajaz meter]: "A one-eyed man seeking a dwelling for his people; he has struggled with life until he is weary; he must either blunt or be blunted." He said: Then he entered one of the valleys of Siffin. Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: And I saw the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ following 'Ammar as if he were a banner for them. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
