✧ Talha b. 'Abd Allah said to me: I attended the market of Busra, and there was a monk in his cell saying, "Ask the people of this season whether any of them is from the people of the Haram." Talha said: I said, "Yes, I am." He said, "Has Ahmad appeared yet?" He said: I said, "Who is Ahmad?" He said, "The son of 'Abd Allah b. 'Abd al-Muttalib. This is the month in which he will emerge. He is the last of the prophets, his emergence is from the Haram, and his emigration is to a place of palm trees, rocky land, and a salt marsh. Beware lest anyone beat you to him." Talha said: What he said fell into my heart, so I departed quickly until I arrived in Makkah. I said, "Has anything happened?" They said, "Yes, Muhammad b. 'Abd Allah al-Amin has declared prophethood, and Ibn Abi Quhafa has followed him." He said: I went out until I entered upon Abu Bakr and said, "Have you followed this man?" He said, "Yes, so go to him and enter upon him and follow him, for he calls to the truth." Talha informed him of what the monk had said. Abu Bakr went out with Talha and brought him in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Talha accepted Islam and informed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of what the monk had said, and it pleased the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Abu Bakr and Talha had accepted Islam, Nawfal b. Khuwaylid b. al-'Adawiyya seized them and bound them with a single rope, and Banu Taym did not protect them. Nawfal b. Khuwaylid was called the strongest of Quraysh, and for that reason Abu Bakr and Talha were called the Two Companions. Talha b. 'Ubayd Allah did not witness Badr, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him and Sa'id b. Zayd to spy on the caravan. They returned after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished fighting the polytheists he encountered, and they met him between Zulal and Sabala on the curtained litter as he was returning from Badr. But he did witness Uhud and other battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was among those who stood firm with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Uhud when the people turned back, and he pledged allegiance to him unto death. Malik b. Zuhayr shot at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that day, and Talha shielded the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his hand. It struck his little finger and it was paralyzed. He said, "Hass! Hass!" when the arrow struck him, and he mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Had he said 'In the name of Allah,' he would have entered Paradise," while the people were looking at him. Talha was struck on his head that day—the hard head—by a man among the polytheists who struck him twice: once when he was advancing and once when he was turning away from him. Dirar b. al-Khattab al-Fihri used to say, "By Allah, I struck him that day."
