✧ I was a servant of al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, and I had embraced Islam, and Umm al-Fadl had embraced Islam, and al-Abbas had embraced Islam, but he was concealing his Islam out of fear of his people. Abu Lahab had stayed behind from Badr and sent in his place al-As b. Hisham, for he owed him a debt. He said to him: 'Take care of this raid for me, and I will leave you what you owe me.' So he did. When the news came and Allah disgraced Abu Lahab, and I was a weak man, carving these wooden bowls in a room. By Allah, I was sitting in the room carving my bowls, and Umm al-Fadl was with me, when the wicked Abu Lahab came dragging his feet—I think he said—at the rope of the room, and his back was to my back. The people said: 'This is Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith.' Abu Lahab said: 'Come to me, O son of my brother.' Abu Sufyan came and sat by him, and the people came and stood over them. He said: 'O son of my brother, how was the affair of the people?' He said: 'Nothing. By Allah, we met them and we gave them our shoulders; they killed us as they wished and captured us as they wished. By Allah, I do not blame the people.' He said: 'Why?' He said: 'I saw white men on piebald horses. By Allah, they do not miss anything, and nothing can stand against them.' He said: 'Then I lifted the rope of the room and said: By Allah, those are the angels.' Abu Lahab raised his hand and struck my face, and I fought with him, but he overpowered me and threw me to the ground until he knelt on my chest. Then Umm al-Fadl stood up, tucked up her garment, took one of the poles of the room, and struck him with it, causing a severe wound on his head. She said: 'O enemy of Allah, you thought him weak because you saw his master absent from him.' He stood up humiliated. By Allah, he lived only seven nights until Allah struck him with the adasah (a plague sore), and it killed him. His two sons left him for two or three nights without burying him until he stank. A man from Quraysh said to his two sons: 'Are you not ashamed? Your father has stunk in his house.' They said: 'We fear this sore.' Quraysh used to fear the adasah as they feared the plague. A man said: 'Go, and I will be with you.' By Allah, they did not wash him except by throwing water on him from a distance. Then they carried him and threw him in upper Makkah against a wall, and they threw stones on him.
