✧ "I entered the markets with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he went to relieve himself." He said: "He came back and I handed him water, and he performed ablution. Then he tried to bring his arms out of his collar but could not, so he brought them out from under the cloak, performed ablution, and wiped over his leather socks."

Notes

machine translationThis is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith from the narration of Mālik b. Anas, and it is authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim), though they did not record it. It contains a great benefit, namely that they did not record the hadith of Ṣafwān b. ʿAssāl about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiping over the two leather socks while resident (not travelling), and the mention of the time limit in it. They only agreed on the reports of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah regarding wiping over the two leather socks. For al-Aswāq is a well-known quarter of the quarters of Medina, and the hadith is well known through Dāwūd b. Qays al-Farrāʾ, according to their criteria.
