machine translationAnd Abū ʿAbdillāh Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Ṣanʿānī informed me in Mecca: Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us: Maʿmar informed us, from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from Qabīṣah b. Jābir al-Asadī, who said: I was in a state of iḥrām and I saw a gazelle, so I shot at it and hit it, and it died. That weighed on my mind, so I went to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb to ask him. I found beside him a fair-skinned man with a delicate face, and it was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. I asked ʿUmar, and he turned to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and said: "Do you think a sheep would suffice for him?" He said: "Yes." So he ordered me to slaughter a sheep. When we got up from his presence, a companion of mine said: The Commander of the Believers was not able to give you a ruling until he asked the man. ʿUmar heard some of his words and struck him with the whip. Then he turned to me to strike me, so I said: O Commander of the Believers, I did not say anything; it was he who said it. He said: So he left me, then said: "You wanted to kill while in a sacred state and to transgress in issuing legal rulings." Then the Commander of the Believers said: "In a human being there are ten character traits, nine good and one bad, and that bad one spoils them." Then he said: "Beware of the slip of youth." This hadith is authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) according to the condition of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim), though they did not record it; according to the condition of al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
