أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ سَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شَبِيبٍ الْمَعْمَرِيَّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ مُصْعَبَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الزُّبَيْرِيَّ يَقُولُ

نُعَيْمُ النَّحَّامِ هُوَ نُعَيْمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَالِدِ بْنِ أُسَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ عَوْفِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عَوِيجِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ أَسْلَمَ قَبْلَ الْهِجْرَةِ مِمَّنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَى أَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُقَالُ لَهُ النَّحَّامُ وَإِنَّمَا قِيلَ لَهُ ذَلِكَ لِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ قَالَ «سَمِعْتُ نَحْمَةً مِنْ نُعَيْمٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ» وَالنَّحْمَةُ الصَّوْتُ

Translation

✧ Nuʿaym al-Naḥḥām is Nuʿaym b. ʿAbdullāh b. Khālid b. Usayd b. ʿAbd ʿAwf b. ʿUbayd b. ʿAwīj b. ʿAdī b. Kaʿb. He embraced Islam before the Hijrah and was among those who emigrated to the land of Abyssinia. He is the one called al-Naḥḥām, and he was called that only because the Prophet ﷺ said: “I heard a soft sound (naḥmah) from Nuʿaym in Paradise.” And al-naḥmah means the voice.
