✧ That some people from 'Adal and al-Qarah—and they are two tribes of Jadilah—came to the Prophet ﷺ after Uhud and said, "In our land there is Islam, so send with us a number of your Companions to teach us the Qur'an and instruct us in Islam." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent with them six men, among them Marthad b. Abi Marthad, the ally of Hamzah b. 'Abd al-Muttalib, and he was their leader; Khalid b. al-Bukayr al-Laythi, the ally of Banu 'Adi; 'Abd Allah b. Tariq al-Zafari; Zayd b. al-Dathinah; Khubayb b. 'Adi; and 'Asim b. Thabit b. Abi al-Aflah. They set out, with Marthad b. Abi Marthad as their leader, until when they were at al-Raji', Hudhayl came upon them. The people were not startled in their camps except by men with swords in their hands who had surrounded them with them. So the people took up their swords to fight, but they said, "By Allah, we do not want to kill you, but we want to capture some of the people of Makkah for ransom. You have the covenant of Allah and His pledge." As for 'Asim, Marthad, and Khalid, they fought until they were killed, and they said, "By Allah, we will never accept from a polytheist a covenant or a pact ever."
