حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَنْبَلٍ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَا ثنا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ إِيَاسِ بْنِ عَفِيفٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَفِيفِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ

كُنْتُ امْرَأً تَاجِرًا، وَكُنْتُ صَدِيقًا لِلْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَقَدِمْتُ لِتِجَارَةٍ، فَنَزَلْتُ عَلَى الْعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بِمِنًى، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الشَّمْسِ حِينَ مَالَتْ، فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي، ثُمَّ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَامَتْ تُصَلِّي، ثُمَّ جَاءَ غُلَامٌ حِينَ رَاهَقَ الْحُلُمَ فَقَامَ يُصَلِّي. فَقُلْتُ لِلْعَبَّاسِ: مَنْ هَذَا؟ فَقَالَ: «هَذَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ابْنِ أَخِي، يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ نَبِيٌّ، وَلَمْ يُتَابِعْهُ عَلَى أَمْرِهِ غَيْرُ هَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَهَذَا الْغُلَامُ، وَهَذِهِ الْمَرْأَةُ خَدِيجَةُ بِنْتُ خُوَيْلِدٍ امْرَأَتُهُ، وَهَذَا الْغُلَامُ ابْنُ عَمِّهِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ». قَالَ عَفِيفٌ الْكِنْدِيُّ، وَأَسْلَمَ وَحَسُنَ إِسْلَامُهُ: «لَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي كُنْتُ أَسْلَمْتُ يَوْمَئِذٍ، فَيَكُونُ لِي رُبْعُ الْإِسْلَامِ».

✧ I was a merchant and a friend of al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib during the time of ignorance. I came on a trading journey and stayed with al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib at Mina. A man came, looked at the sun when it had passed its zenith, and stood to pray. Then a woman came and stood to pray. Then a boy who was approaching puberty came and stood to pray. I asked al-Abbas, “Who is this?” He replied: “This is Muhammad b. Abdullah b. Abd al-Muttalib, my nephew. He claims that he is a prophet, and no one besides this woman and this boy has followed him in his affair. This woman is Khadijah bt. Khuwaylid, his wife, and this boy is his cousin, Ali b. Abi Talib.” Afif al-Kindi, who embraced Islam and became a good Muslim, said: “I wish that I had embraced Islam that day, so that a quarter of Islam would have belonged to me.”

  • ✧ This hadith has an authentic chain of transmission, though neither of the two compilers included it. It has a reliable corroborating report from the descendants of Afif b. Amr. Authentic.
