✧ When Abu al-Haysar Anas b. Rafi' came to Makkah with a group of young men from Banu Abd al-Ashhal, among them Iyas b. Mu'adh, seeking an alliance with Quraysh against their own people from Khazraj, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard of them and went to them. He sat with them and said: "Would you like something better than what you came for?" They said: "And what is that?" He said: "I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah sent me to the servants, calling them to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, and He revealed to me the Book." Then he mentioned Islam to them and recited the Qur'an to them. Iyas b. Mu'adh, who was a young boy, said: "O people, by Allah, this is better than what you came for." He said: Abu al-Haysar took a handful of pebbles and struck the face of Iyas b. Mu'adh with them, saying: "Leave us alone. By my life, we have come for other than this." Iyas fell silent, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up, and they departed to Madinah. Then the battle of Bu'ath took place between the Aws and the Khazraj. He said: Iyas b. Mu'adh did not remain long before he died. Mahmud b. Labid said: One of my people who attended his death informed me that they kept hearing him declaring the oneness of Allah, magnifying Him, praising Him, and glorifying Him until he died. He said: They had no doubt that he had died a Muslim, for he had embraced Islam in that gathering when he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he heard.
