✧ Abd al-Rahman b. Awf was with Umar b. al-Khattab, and Muhammad b. Maslamah broke the sword of al-Zubayr. Then Abu Bakr stood and addressed the people, apologizing to them. He said: By Allah, I was never eager for authority for a single day or night, nor desirous of it, nor did I ask Allah ﷻ for it in secret or openly. But I feared tribulation. I have no comfort in authority, but I have been entrusted with a momentous matter for which I have no strength or means except with the strengthening of Allah ﷻ. I would wish that the strongest of people to bear it were in my place today. The Muhajirun accepted from him what he said and his apology. Ali and al-Zubayr said: We were not angry except because we were delayed from consultation, and we see Abu Bakr as the most deserving of the people for it after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for he is the companion of the cave and the second of two, and we know his honor and his seniority. And indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to lead the people in prayer while he was still alive.
