حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ ثنا الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ قَتَادَةَ يَقُولُ

بَعَثَ اللَّهُ شُعَيْبًا النَّبِيَّ ﷺ إِلَى أُمَّتَيْنِ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ أَهْلِ مَدْيَنَ وَإِلَى أَصْحَابِ الْأَيْكَةِ فَكَانَتِ الْأَيْكَةُ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مُلْتَفٍّ فَلَمَّا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَرًّا شَدِيدًا وَرَفَعَ لَهُمُ الْعَذَابَ كَأَنَّهُ سَحَابَةٌ فَلَمَّا دَنَتْ مِنْهُمْ خَرَجُوا إِلَيْهَا رَجَاءَ بَرْدِهَا فَلَمَّا كَانُوا تَحْتَهَا مَطَرَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَقَالَ فَذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ ﷻ {فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ} [الشعراء 189] سكت عنه الذهبي في التلخيص

Translation

✧ Allah sent Shu'aib the Prophet ﷺ to two nations: to his people, the people of Madyan, and to the companions of the Aikah. The Aikah was of tangled trees. When Allah willed to punish them, He sent upon them severe heat and raised for them the punishment as if it were a cloud. When it drew near them, they went out to it hoping for its coolness. When they were beneath it, it rained upon them. He said: That is His saying ﷻ {Then the punishment of the Day of Shadow seized them} [al-Shu'ara' 189]. Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the Talkhis.
