✧ Wahb b. Munabbih was asked about Hud: "Was he the father of al-Yaman who begot them?" Wahb said: "No, but he was the brother of al-Yaman, and in the Torah he is traced back to Nuh. When tribalism arose among the Arabs and Mudar boasted of its father Isma'il, al-Yaman claimed Hud as a father so that they would be descendants of the prophets and his offspring among them. But he is not their father; rather, he is their brother. He was sent only to 'Ad." Wahb did not name 'Ad, nor did he trace their tribes, nor did he mention their poetry. There was no nation on earth greater in number than them, nor larger in bodies, nor stronger in might. When they saw the wind approaching them, they said to Hud, "You frighten us with the wind." So they gathered their children, wealth, and livestock into a mountain pass, then stood at the entrance of that pass to keep the wind away from their wealth and families. But the wind entered from beneath their feet, between them and the ground, until it uprooted them. Wahb said: When Allah sent to them Hud b. 'Abd Allah b. Rabah b. al-Harith b. 'Ad b. 'Aws b. Iram b. Sam b. Nuh, every sand dune that Allah placed in any part of the lands was a dwelling of 'Ad in its sands. The land of 'Ad was the most fertile land of the Arabs, with the most abundance of water, rivers, and gardens. When Allah became angry with them and they became arrogant toward Allah—and they were people of idols that they worshiped besides Allah—Allah sent upon them the barren wind.
