✧ We attended the gathering of Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan, and the people discussed Isma'il and Ishaq b. Ibrahim. Some said the sacrificed one is Isma'il, and others said rather Ishaq is the sacrificed one. Mu'awiyah said: 'You have fallen upon an expert. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a Bedouin came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I left the lands dry and the water dried up, wealth has perished and families are lost, so give me from what Allah has granted you as spoils, O son of the two sacrificed ones. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and did not object. We said: O Commander of the Faithful, who are the two sacrificed ones? He said: When 'Abd al-Muttalib was ordered to dig Zamzam, he vowed to Allah that if Allah facilitated its matter, he would slaughter one of his children. He brought them out and cast lots among them, and the lot fell upon 'Abdullah. He intended to slaughter him, but his maternal uncles from Banu Makhzum prevented him and said: Appease your Lord and ransom your son. He said: So he ransomed him with one hundred camels. He said: He is the first sacrificed one, and Isma'il is the second.'
