أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَاضِي ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَنْبَأَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ الْقَطِيعِيُّ وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنِي يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنِي صَالِحٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي صُعَيْرٍ الْعُذْرِيُّ قَالَ
كَانَ الْمُسْتَفْتِحَ أَبُو جَهْلٍ فَإِنَّهُ قَالَ حِينَ الْتَقَى الْقَوْمُ اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّنَا كَانَ أَقْطَعَ لِلرَّحِمِ وَآتَانَا بِمَا لَا نَعْرِفُ فَاحْنِهِ الْغَدَاةَ فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ اسْتِفْتَاحَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ {إِنْ تَسْتَفْتِحُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَكُمُ الْفَتْحُ} [الأنفال 19] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ} [الأنفال 19]

✧ Abu Jahl was the one who sought judgment. For when the two parties met, he said: 'O Allah, whichever of us was more severing of kinship and brought us what we do not know, then destroy him this morning.' That was his seeking of judgment. Then Allah revealed: {If you seek judgment, then judgment has come to you} [Al-Anfal 19] up to His saying {and that Allah is with the believers} [Al-Anfal 19].
