✧ He had a wife older than him, and he married a young woman in addition to her, and he preferred the virgin over her. His first wife refused to be content with that, so he divorced her with one divorce. Then when only a little of her waiting period remained, he said: 'If you wish, I will take you back and you will be patient with being less preferred; if you wish, I will leave you until your waiting period ends.' She said: 'Rather take me back; I will be patient with being less preferred.' He took her back, then again preferred the other over her, and she did not remain patient with being less preferred. Then he divorced the other one and preferred the young woman over her. That is the reconciliation about which it has reached us that Allah revealed: {And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them}.
