✧ We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Baṭḥāʾ when a cloud passed by. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do you know what this is?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It is clouds.” We said, “Clouds.” He said, “And rain-clouds.” We said, “And rain-clouds.” He said, “And high clouds.” We said, “And high clouds.” Then he fell silent. Then he said, “Do you know how much is between the heaven and the earth?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Between them is a distance of five hundred years’ journey, and from each heaven to the next is a distance of five hundred years’ journey, and the thickness of each heaven is a distance of five hundred years’ journey. Above the seventh heaven is a sea, between its top and bottom is like what is between the heaven and the earth. Then above that are eight mountain goats, between their knees and hooves is like what is between the heaven and the earth, and Allah, exalted is He, is above that; nothing of the deeds of the children of Adam is hidden from Him.”

Notes

machine translationThis is a ḥadīth with a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), though the two [al-Bukhārī and Muslim] did not record it. Yaḥyā is very weak (wāhin).

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationI do not know of any raised (marfūʿ) ḥadīth on this topic except the ḥadīth of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmayrah, and it is a well-known (mashhūr) ḥadīth with this chain. A group narrated it from Simāk, among them Abū Khālid al-Dālānī, ʿUmar and Ibn Abī ʿAmr b. Abī Qays, Shuʿayb b. Abī Khālid, Ibn Abī al-Miqdām, Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān and al-Walīd b. Abī Thawr.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationThe chain is sound (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād).

machine translationHe is not corroborated, and his narrations are not preserved (ghayr maḥfūẓ). Yaḥyā b. al-ʿAlāʾ is clearly weak (ḍaʿīf) in his narration and his ḥadīth.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThere is disagreement about it from Simāk. al-Bukhārī said: It is not known that he heard from al-Aḥnaf.
