أَخْبَرَنِي مُكْرَمُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ الْقَاضِي ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ الزِّبْرِقَانِ ثنا أَبُو ثنا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ حَدَّثَنِي شَقِيقُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ الْعَبْدِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ «حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَصَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ» فَقَرَأْنَاهَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَا شَاءَ أَنْ نَقْرَأَهَا ثُمَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ نَسَخَهَا فَأَنْزَلَ {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى} [البقرة 238] فَقَالَ لَهُ رَجُلٌ أَهِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ؟ فَقَالَ «أَخْبَرْتُكَ كَيْفَ نَزَلَتْ وَكَيْفَ نَسَخَهَا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ»
Translation

✧ When 'Guard strictly the prayers and the 'Asr prayer' was revealed, we recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as long as Allah willed for us to recite it. Then Allah abrogated it and revealed: {Guard strictly the prayers and the middle prayer} [al-Baqarah 238]. A man said to him: Is it the 'Asr prayer? He said: "I have informed you how it was revealed and how Allah abrogated it, and Allah knows best."
