✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and some of his companions had lagged behind in travel. He raised his voice with these two verses: "Yā ayyuhā al-nāsu ittaqū rabbakum inna zalzalata al-sāʿati shayʾun ʿaẓīm. Yawma tarawnahā tadh-halu kullu murḍiʿatin ʿammā arḍaʿat wa taḍaʿu kullu dhāti ḥamlin ḥamlahā wa tara al-nāsa sukārā wa mā hum bi-sukārā wa lākinna ʿadhāba Allāhi shadīd" [al-Ḥajj:2]. When his companions heard that, they urged on their mounts, and they knew that he had something to say. He said: "Do you know which day that is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "A day when Adam will call upon his Lord, and He will say: 'O Adam, send forth the delegation of the Fire.' He will say: 'O Lord, and what is the delegation of the Fire?' He will say: 'From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire, and one to Paradise.'" So his companions were struck with despair, and they did not show a single smile. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw what had befallen his companions, he said: "Know and rejoice, for by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are with two creations that have never been with anything except that they increased it: Gog and Magog, and those who perished from the children of Adam and the children of Iblis." Then some of what they were feeling was relieved. Then he said: "Know and rejoice, for by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are among mankind only like a mole on the side of a camel, or like a mark on the foreleg of a beast." The hadith of Hishām al-Dastuwāʾī is a sound hadith, for most of our early imams hold that al-Ḥasan did hear from ʿImrān b. Ḥuṣayn. But when Hishām and al-Ḥakam b. ʿAbd al-Malik differ, the word is that of Hishām. Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAbd al-Malik is weak.
