✧ I was a slave in Egypt belonging to a woman from Hudhayl. She freed me, and I did not leave Egypt while it had any knowledge but that I gathered it, as far as I could. Then I came to Syria and sifted through it, all the while asking about the extra spoils. I found no one to tell me anything about it until I met an old man called Ziyad b. Jariyah al-Tamimi. I said to him, 'Have you heard anything about the extra spoils?' He said, 'Yes, I heard Habib b. Maslamah al-Fihri say: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give a quarter as extra spoils at the beginning of an expedition and a third on the return.' Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in the summary.
