✧ I used to hear a hadith from Abu Dharr and I wished to meet him. So I met him and said, “O Abu Dharr, I used to hear a hadith from you and I wished to meet you.” He said, “May your father be devoted to Allah, for you have met me.” He said, “I said, ‘Tell me: I have heard that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told you…’” He said, “Indeed Allah loves three and hates three.” He said, “I do not think that I would lie about my close friend (the Prophet).” He said, “I said, ‘Who are those whom Allah loves?’ He said, ‘A man who goes on a military expedition in the path of Allah, patiently, seeking reward, striving, then meets the enemy and fights until he is killed. You find this in the Book of Allah, the revealed.’ Then he recited this verse: {Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a solid structure} [al-Saff: 4]. I said, ‘And who else?’ He said, ‘A man who has a bad neighbor who harms him, and he bears his harm patiently until Allah suffices him, either by life or by death.’ I said, ‘And who else?’ He said, ‘A man who travels with a group, and they travel by night until, when it is the last part of the night, drowsiness and sleepiness overcome them, so they lay down their heads. Then he gets up, purifies himself, out of fear of Allah and desire for what is with Him.’ I said, ‘And who are the three whom Allah hates?’ He said, ‘The arrogant boaster. You find this in the Book of Allah, the revealed: {Indeed, Allah does not love everyone who is arrogant and boastful} [Luqman: 18]. I said, ‘And who else?’ He said, ‘The miser who reminds of his favors.’ He said, ‘And who else?’ He said, ‘The merchant or seller who swears much.’”
