✧ I heard 'Awf b. Malik al-Ashja'i say: We halted with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a place. I woke up during the night, and I could not see anything longer than the rear of my saddle; every person and his camel were stuck to the ground. I got up and made my way through the people until I came to the resting place of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was not there. I placed my hand on the bed, and it was cold. I went out making my way through the people and saying, 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return' [al-Baqarah 156]. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been taken away. I continued until I exited the entire army, and I saw a black shape. I threw a stone at it, then went toward the black shape. There were Mu'adh b. Jabal and Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and in front of us was a sound like the rumbling of a mill or like the sound of a large rock when the wind hits it. Some of us said to others, 'O people, stay firm until morning or until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes to you.' We waited as long as Allah willed, then he called out, 'Are Mu'adh b. Jabal, Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and 'Awf b. Malik there?' We said yes. He came toward us, and we went out, not asking him about anything and he not telling us, until he sat on his bed. Then he said, 'Do you know what my Lord offered me tonight?' We said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'He offered me a choice between admitting half of my nation to Paradise and intercession, and I chose intercession.' We said, 'O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to make us among its people.' He said, 'It is for every Muslim.'
