✧ ʿAlī and ʿUthmān performed Hajj. When they were on part of the road, ʿUthmān forbade tamattuʿ (combining ʿUmrah with Hajj). It was said to ʿAlī, “He has forbidden tamattuʿ.” He said, “When you see him depart, depart.” So ʿAlī and his companions pronounced the talbiyah for ʿUmrah, and ʿUthmān did not forbid them. Then ʿAlī said, “Was I not informed that you forbid tamattuʿ with ʿUmrah?” He said, “Yes.” ʿAlī said, “Did you not hear that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed tamattuʿ?” He said, “Yes.”
