“I asked Jabir bin ‘Abdullah about hyenas: ‘Are they game (that can be hunted)?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Can I eat them?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Is this something that you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ He said: ‘Yes.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3236)
Notes
machine translationThis is an authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith meeting the conditions of the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim), though they did not include it in their collections. Jarīr b. Ḥāzim summarized it from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿAmmār, from Jābir b. ʿAbdillāh, who said: «The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that for the hyena, if a person in the state of iḥrām kills it, the penalty is a Najdī ram, and he counted it as game.»

machine translationʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī ʿAmmār was alone in transmitting it. A group of the imams of hadith have declared him trustworthy (thiqah), and they narrated this hadith of his from him and used it as evidence. But he is not well known for transmitting knowledge, and he is not among those whose narration is taken as evidence when someone more reliable than he contradicts him.
