✧ When Adam ﷺ was near death, he said to his sons, “Go and gather fruits of Paradise for me.” His sons went out, and the angels met them and said, “Where are you heading, O sons of Adam?” They said, “Our father sent us to gather fruits of Paradise for him.” They said, “Return, for you have been spared.” They returned with them until they entered upon Adam. When Hawwa saw them, she was startled by them and began to draw close to Adam and cling to him. Adam said to her, “Away from me, away from me! It was because of you that I was brought to this. Leave me alone with the angels of my Lord.” Then they took his soul, washed him, embalmed him, shrouded him, prayed over him, dug for him, and buried him. Then they said, “O sons of Adam, this is your practice for your dead, so do likewise.”

Notes

machine translation"This hadith has a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād), but the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not record it. It is of the type for which a Follower (tābiʿī) has only one narrator, for ʿUtayy b. Þamrah al-Saʿdī has no narrator other than al-Ḥasan. In my view, the two Shaykhs found it defective for another reason, namely that it was narrated from al-Ḥasan from Ubayy without mentioning ʿUtayy."
