أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَ

مَنْ قَرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ فَلْيَتَعَلَّمِ الْفَرَائِضَ فَإِنْ لَقِيَهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ قَالَ يَا مُهَاجِرُ أَتَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ؟ فَإِنْ قَالَ نَعَمْ قَالَ تَفْرِضُ؟ فَإِنْ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَهُوَ زِيَادَةٌ وَخَيْرٌ وَإِنْ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَمَا فَضْلُكَ عَلَيَّ يَا مُهَاجِرُ

Translation

✧ "Whoever reads the Quran, let him learn the obligations, for if he meets an Arab, and the Arab asks, 'Do you read the Quran?' If he says 'Yes,' then he asks, 'Do you fulfill the obligations?' If he says 'Yes,' then it is something additional and good. But if he says 'No,' then the Arab asks, 'What is your superiority over me, O emigrant?'"
