✧ Al-Adba' belonged to a man from Banu 'Uqayl. He was taken captive and al-Adba' was seized. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by him while he was in bonds. He said, “O Muhammad, why do you take me and take the foremost of the pilgrims' camels, when I have become Muslim?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “If you had said it while you were in control of your affairs, you would have attained every success.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “We take you because of the crime of your allies.” Thaqif had captured two men from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came on a donkey with a velvet cloth over it. He said, “O Muhammad, I am hungry, so feed me, and thirsty, so give me water.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “This is your need.” Then the man was ransomed for two men, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept al-Adba' for his saddle, and it was one of the foremost camels of the pilgrims. Then the polytheists raided the grazing livestock of Madinah and took it, including al-Adba', and they captured a Muslim woman. When they camped, Abu Muhammad said—then he mentioned a word—their camels were in their courtyards. One night, the woman got up while they were asleep, and she would not place her hands on any camel except that it grumbled, until she came to al-Adba'. She came to a docile, belled she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mounted it, then headed toward Madinah. She vowed that if Allah saved her, she would surely slaughter it. When she arrived, the camel was recognized, and it was said, “The she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” They brought her to the Prophet ﷺ, and the woman told him of her vow. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What a bad reward you have given it—or what a bad reward it has received—if Allah saved her, she would surely slaughter it. There is no fulfillment of a vow in disobedience to Allah, nor in what a son of Adam does not own.”
